Speaking Teacher writes out language patterns onto sentence strips and places them in a pocket chart to be displayed throughout unit.

Teacher uses PPA1 to introduce language that people use when they are trying to retell a story.

Teacher and students together brainstorm any additional language that might come in handy when recounting a personal experience.

One way of brainstorming is to have students share out stories from their childhood and the teacher listen for and chart a list of language that would be helpful in recounting a personal experience.
Students talk about recent activities using the present perfect continuous tenses using Interchange 2, Unit 12, Part 10.

(See Teacher’s Edition Pg. T-82)
Students play “Life is Like a Game” from Interchange 2, Teacher’s Edition, Interchange 12 Activity, Pg. T-126) Teacher makes several copies of document A2 and cuts the sentence starters into strips.

Teacher also makes a copy of PPA3 (story starters).

Students sit in a large circle on the floor. Any student can go first. The first student pulls a card from PPA3 and reads the story starter aloud to the class.

The student to his or her left pulls a sentence strip (A2) and must continue the story while incorporating the sentence into what they add.

The next student to the left pulls a sentence strip and continues the story, again incorporating the language pattern into their story.

Continue passing it on until the story is done. A new student pulls a story starter and the class constructs another story.
